Shots fired nearby lead to Oak Park elementary school lockdown

Due to a rumored shooting nearby, an elementary school in Oak Park was closed on Friday in advance of the holiday weekend, according to village officials.

Around 3:10 p.m., Oak Park police responded to a report of gunfire near South Cuyler Avenue/Ridgeland Avenue and Garfield Street.

Just before 4 p.m., Oak Park officials claimed that several callers had reported hearing six to nine rounds fired from a black SUV that was traveling west on Garfield.

Although no one was reportedly hurt, some property was damaged and bullets were discovered in the neighborhood.

As of about 3:30 p.m., Washington Irving School was on a soft lockdown.

This is a developing story.
