Daniel Van Durme, Florida State U chief medical officer dies in motorcycle accident

The chief medical officer for Florida State University in Tallahassee, Daniel Van Durme, MD, passed away on May 30 from wounds sustained in a motorcycle accident that happened in late April.

Since 2004 Dr. Van Durme had been employed with Florida State. He held both family practice and sports medicine board certifications. No comment has yet been released by the university.

His wife set up a page with comments in his honor noting that “The head trauma was just too great.” … it reads. “If you want to pay tribute to Dan, please be kind to one another and work to serve the good of everyone!”

On Monday, a motorbike rider from Reddick, age 36, was killed after it collided with a vehicle on Marion County’s Interstate 75.

The motorcycle was moving fast near milepost 372 just before 4:55 in the afternoon. The Florida Highway Patrol incident report states that witnesses saw the motorbike crash with the sedan’s rear before the rider lost control of his ride.

The I-75 accident was reported to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and Marion County Fire Rescue. The biker was found to have died at the site after suffering fatal injuries.

The report names a 20-year-old Fort Myers guy as the sedan’s driver and only occupant. He was unharmed.

The accident is still being looked into. The Florida Highway Patrol withheld identifying information about the accident’s drivers.
