On June 9, 2023, just after 10:30 p.m., the Rayne Police Department received word of a deadly collision on the westbound I-10 close to the 86-mile marker. Kevin Michael Johnston, a 30-year-old resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, died in the collision.
According to the preliminary investigation, Kevin Johnston was operating a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban westbound on I-10 when it collided with a 2018 GMC Acadia. Following the collision, Kevin Johnston got out of his car on I-10 and was tragically hit by a 2011 Ford Taurus.
Before the original collision, Johnston was allegedly driving erratically for several miles, according to witnesses. Although a blood toxicology sample was obtained for processing, it is now unknown if Johnston’s erratic driving was caused by intoxication or a medical condition.
Because the Taurus’s driver voluntarily provided a breath sample, which revealed no alcohol was present, the driver was not suspected of being intoxicated. The driver was securely secured and was unharmed. This collision is still being looked into.
